Salvaged architectural hardware and fixtures, Moss Vale
FAQs
Good Questions. Straight Answers. Whether you're new to recycled building materials or a seasoned renovator, chances are you've got a question or two. Here are the ones we hear most often.
Our Stock & Materials Q: What materials do you stock? We carry a broad range of salvaged building materials including structural hardwood timber, recycled floorboards, doors and windows, bricks, pavers, corrugated iron, and reclaimed hardware and fixtures. Our stock changes regularly as new lots come in — the best way to see what's available is to drop in or give us a call. Q: How often does your stock change? Quite often. We source from demolitions, rural clearances, and estate sales across NSW, so new material can arrive any week. And of, we sell stuff! What is in stock today, may not be there tomorrow. If you're after something specific, get in touch and we'll keep an eye out for you. We also recommend following us on Facebook and Gumtree to see new arrivals as they come in. Q: How do you sort your timber? We inspect all timber before it goes on the yard, based on condition and suitability. Structural-grade timber is assessed for integrity and load-bearing capacity, cracks, holes, etc. Feature-grade timber may have surface checking, nail holes, or variation that makes it ideal for visual applications but not structural ones. Most will be denailed where possible. Q: Do you sell small quantities, or is there a minimum purchase? We're happy to sell small quantities — there's no minimum order. Quality & Suitability Q: Is recycled timber structurally sound? It can be excellent — often better than new plantation timber. Old-growth hardwoods like ironbark, spotted gum, and grey gum were grown slowly over centuries, producing very dense, tight-grained wood that is harder and more dimensionally stable than most modern alternatives. That said, not all recycled timber is structural grade. Each item needs to be inspected before use. Same with old growth Oregon and Douglas Fir. They have amazing grain stucture which gives it strength and stability. Q: What's the difference between recycled hardwood and new timber? Recycled hardwood in our yard typically comes from trees felled 80–150 years ago, when old-growth forests were still being logged. This timber has a significantly tighter grain structure than modern plantation timber, which grows much faster. Tighter grain generally means greater hardness, better durability, and less movement over time. In many applications, well-graded recycled hardwood simply outperforms its modern equivalent. Q: Will recycled floorboards need a lot of work before installation? Usually some preparation is required — removing old nails, cleaning, and checking for consistency in thickness. Once installed, recycled floorboards are sanded and finished like any other timber floor. Many people find the preparation worthwhile given the quality and character of the finished result. Q: Are your bricks suitable for building? Many of our recycled bricks are suitable for construction, but suitability depends on the application. There is a high demand for “sandstocks” for their character and use in heritage restorations. We'd recommend checking with your builder or structural engineer about specific requirements. Our team can tell you about the origin and likely age of any bricks we have in stock. Q: Can I inspect materials before I buy? Yes, and we encourage it. Our yard is open during business hours and you're welcome to come and look through the stock. For structural applications, we'd always recommend having a qualified person assess suitability — but we're happy to answer questions and help you understand what you're looking at. Buying & Pricing Q: How is your timber priced? Pricing varies by species, grade, dimensions, condition, and quantity. We price items individually and by the lineal metre, board metre, or lot depending on the material. The best approach is to come in with your requirements and we can give you an accurate quote. We're always happy to discuss pricing on larger orders. Q: Can I reserve materials while I confirm my project details? We understand that projects take time to confirm. We can hold materials for a short period in some circumstances — give us a call to discuss. Please note that popular or limited stock may not be available for extended holds, so it's worth moving reasonably quickly on anything you're serious about. Q: Do you buy materials, or only sell? We're always interested in acquiring quality salvaged materials. If you have timber, bricks, doors, windows, or other materials from a renovation or demolition, get in touch and we'll let you know if it's something we can use. We can sometimes arrange collection for larger lots. In most cases, disposal is expensive and contacting us about your items may be more economical. Delivery & Logistics Q: Do you deliver? Yes, local delivery can be arranged. We service the Southern Highlands, Wollondilly, Goulburn and the Illawarra. Delivery pricing depends on quantity, material type, and location. For large items or interstate deliveries, you will have to organise your own pick up or freight. Q: Can I pick up materials myself? Absolutely. Many customers load their own vehicles from the yard. Please bring an appropriate vehicle for the quantity and dimensions of what you're purchasing — we're happy to advise on this when you call ahead. We have a forklift on site for heavier loads. Sustainability Q: How sustainable is buying recycled building materials really? Very. Every piece of material we sell has already been manufactured — the energy, water, and resources used to produce it were expended decades ago. By giving it a second life, you're avoiding both the waste of sending it to landfill and the environmental cost of producing new material. Salvaged old-growth timber in particular represents a significant embodied carbon saving compared to newly manufactured equivalents. Q: Where do your materials come from? We source from demolition contractors, rural and agricultural property clearances, estate sales, and heritage building projects across NSW. We prioritise materials that would otherwise be lost to landfill. Every lot has a different story — some of our timber has come from buildings that are over a century old. Q: Is buying recycled timber better than buying certified new timber? They address different things. Certified new timber (such as FSC-certified) ensures responsible forest management for future supply. Recycled timber avoids the need for any new logging and carries far lower embodied carbon. For many applications — especially where durability, character, and environmental impact are priorities — recycled old-growth hardwood is the strongest choice on all fronts. Practical Tips Q: What should I bring when I visit the yard? It helps to come prepared with your measurements and a clear idea of what you need — species preference if you have one, dimensions, quantity, and intended use. A tape measure is useful. If you're sourcing for a specific structural application, bring your plans or specifications so we can help properly. Sturdy footwear is recommended in the yard. Q: Can I bring my builder or architect to the yard? Please do. We enjoy working with design and construction professionals and can help with sampling, specification, and quantities. Q: I'm not sure exactly what I need. Can you help me figure it out? That's what we're here for. Bring your plans, your photos, or just your ideas, and we'll work through it with you. We've helped all kinds of people — from first-time renovators to experienced builders — find the right material for their project. There are no silly questions in a timber yard.
